Barely thirty miles from the City of London, the Hoo Peninsula sticks out into the estuary where the Rivers Thames and Medway meet. Michael Collins visited the peninsula over several years, working with a large format camera in the tradition of nineteenth century record pictures. With their rich detail and matter of fact depiction, Record Picture photography was commissioned by government and industry to document industrial progression; on Hoo, Michael Collins' photographs reveal its demise. Influenced also by the history of European topographical and archaeological studies, and plein air painting, Pictures From The Hoo Peninsula is simultaneously an exploration of the cycle of Western industrial decline, a testament to the continuum of this landscape tradition, and a pursuit of the possibilities of the analogue/digital hybrid in the creation of the contemporary photographic tableau.
